Understanding Different Approaches to Healthcare:
Transactional, Episodic, Health Programs. Which is right for you?
Healthcare can be approached in various ways, each with its own set of benefits and limitations. Today, let's explore three major approaches: transactional care, episodic care, and healing programs.
Transactional Care: Quick Fixes for Immediate Concerns
Transactional care is like going to a store to buy something specific. You have a health issue, you visit a healthcare provider, get treatment, and that's it. It's straightforward and focuses on immediate solutions. Imagine you have a sore throat; you see a doctor, maybe get some medicine, and the issue is addressed. However, this approach often doesn't look at the bigger picture of your overall health. What led to the sore throat? How is the rest of your immune system responding? What might happen next if not resolved?
Episodic Care: Addressing Separate Health Events
Episodic care is similar to fixing problems as they come, without a continuous plan. It's like dealing with health concerns one episode at a time. For example, if you hurt your ankle, you get treatment for that particular injury. Then, if later you have a different health issue, like a headache, that's treated as a separate event. This approach can be helpful for sudden or unexpected health issues but might not consider your long-term health journey.
At times, this can also set up the patient and the physician for failure. I recently had a client talk to me about an issue she was having with her skin. The PCP thought that it was related to a blood pressure medication. He removed the medication, 5 weeks later, the skin condition persisted. And, Her Blood pressure was 199/136. They just kept adding medication, but her blood pressure just kept getting worse.
The episode did not lead to overall health or healing and landed this client in the ER.
Healing Programs: The Journey to Long-Term Wellness
Healing programs are like a guided journey towards better health and wellness. These programs are designed to not only treat immediate health concerns but also to promote overall well-being and prevent future issues. They often involve understanding your body's unique needs, maybe even your genetics, and crafting a personalized plan. This could include nutritional changes, regular check-ups, and lifestyle adjustments. It's all about helping you not just get better from a current health problem but also stay healthy in the long run.
Which Approach is Right for You?
Choosing the right approach depends on your health goals and needs. Transactional and episodic care can be effective for immediate or specific health issues. But if you're looking for a more holistic and long-term solution, a healing program might be the way to go. Remember, everyone's health journey is unique, and what works for one person might not be the best for another.
