Real Deal on Intuitive Eating: Listen to Your Body, Not the Hype

Hey everyone! Dr. Marci here. Lately, I've been hearing a lot about intuitive eating. But, to be honest, a lot of it sounds...well, like garbage. How do I know? Let's talk.

1. Misconceptions Floating Around:

  • "I don’t like veggies, so I probably don't need them."
  • "Eating Oreos or M&Ms daily is okay."
  • "Pasta and boxed oatmeal every day? Sure, we need carbs!"

2. Real Intuitive Eating in Action:

I have a story to share. My twin boy, Austin, knew at 13 months old which foods didn’t sit well with him. He'd reject certain items like spinach, even if he was super hungry. But he happily munched on broccoli, asparagus, and more. He listens to his body, asking, "How do I feel with this food?"

3. What Intuitive Eating Isn't:

It's NOT about choosing unhealthy options and saying, "I'm just eating intuitively." That's misleading. Your body, in its natural state, won't crave artificial chemicals.

4. A Healthy Approach:

  • 15 servings of vegetables and 4-5 of fruit daily
  • 4-6 ounces of protein twice a day
  • Healthy fats like avocados and nuts
  • Use natural oils and fats for cooking like ghee or tallow.

5. Things to Be Wary Of:

Consistently picking foods full of dyes, preservatives, or unpronounceable ingredients is not intuition—it's convenient. And often, it's a form of self-harm.

6. Closing Thoughts:

It’s essential to cut through the noise and truly understand what our bodies are trying to tell us. Let’s be real with ourselves and make choices that support our well-being.
